Overview
Berberine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of berberine, an isoquinoline (protoberberine) quaternary alkaloid naturally present in Berberis and Coptis species. GreeneryBio supplies it as a fine yellow crystalline powder, standardized by HPLC (assay customizable, commonly ≥97%). Berberine has been widely studied in research for its AMPK-modulating and other metabolic activities; we supply it strictly as a B2B raw material for formulation, with no consumer claims attached.
Applications & Formulation Notes
- Suitable dosage forms: hard capsules and tablets are most common. Berberine's intense bitterness and strong yellow color make chewables, gummies and clear beverages difficult without taste-masking or coating.
- Solubility & bioavailability: the HCl salt aids handling, but berberine is poorly water-soluble and has low oral bioavailability — formulators often use micronized grades, or co-process with absorption enhancers.
- Salt basis on the spec: state explicitly whether an assay refers to the HCl salt or to berberine cation, and whether the material is anhydrous or a hydrate — the two bases differ by close to 10% on mass.
- Handling: store cool, dry and away from light; the powder stains readily — use appropriate containment.
